The International Day of Light, celebrated on May 16, highlights light’s role in science, culture, and sustainability. Over 80% of people live under light-polluted skies, affecting wildlife and sleep, while light enables lasers in surgery, fiber optics for internet, and powers life from the Sun. Photons take 100,000–1,000,000 years to escape the Sun but reach Earth in 8 minutes 20 seconds, and the oldest light is 13.8 billion years old from the Big Bang. Be a “Light Guardian” by reducing unnecessary lights and stargazing.
